A Career In Sports Recruiting Consultation

Good Afternoon followers of THE PROCESS BLOG. I have been getting so many contacts from people lately that have been inquiring about my business and how they can become involved. So, I figured let's get out information on what I am looking for to be successful in my business. First of all I look for former college players who are now coaches that have some basic background in the current college recruiting process. This is so key. I have a lot of people contact me who say they love sports but have not played at the college level. In this day and age it just will not work because you have to have the general knowledge as to how the recruiting process works. It is hard enough for me who has 35 years experience in coaching and recruiting to makekeep up with rules, weekly changes and also being able to get my clients out to the right fit schools. Does the kid fit the program athletically, academically and socially ? this is what I ask myself when sending information and updates out on clients.

Being able to honestly evaluate kids and their talent and get them to the schools that fit the mold. This is an absolute key to success in the recruiting consultant business. My playing background plus 35 years of coaching experience at the collegiate, hs and elite travel levels have enabled me to work with some of the best kids across the nation. When you put your name on sending out information to college coaches you have to make sure you send to appropriate levels for each kids makeup. In doing so you also have to be transparent to the player and family on your evaluation and how you came to it. I know there are a lot of "Tweeners" as we call them that are those players who can play at different levels and I always make sure to get your information and updates to all those higher level schools if they are a favorite or right fit for you.

It takes time and experience to get the qualities that allow you to be able to evaluate at this level. I have 2 guys Justin Berg and Jeremy Graley JR who work directly for me as reps and 100's of contacts across the nation who I also use to help in evaluating. Longevity is also the key. I got into this business 15 years ago when talking to a great mentor and friend Tim Ryerson of Student Athlete World who contacted me about getting into this area of the business. I already hadd the background, knowledge and experience of putting 1000's of kids in all sports into the collegiate and professional levels as a Coach and Athletic Director. Student Athlete World and Tim taught me to work as a coach that was promoting and recommending their athletes to schools which I already did very well. Communication and confidence come into play as well. Having the ability to talk the language of coaches and know what they are looking for. The confidence that you are right and the willingness to fight for your kids is essential and a selling point to colleges.
